BeFree Eligibility

Whether you are a first-year student, a recent high school graduate, a transfer, an adult with minimal college experience, or have an associate’s degree from another institution, you may be eligible for the BeFree Tuition guarantee.

Applicants must:

  • Be an undergraduate student
  • Be pursuing a credentialed certificate, associate’s or bachelor’s degree
  • Have not previously earned a bachelor’s degree
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Qualify for the maximum Federal Pell Grant award amount (typically income below $50,000, but varies based on family size and other information from the FAFSA application)
  • Have a high school or college cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Attend at least half-time
  • Institutional fees not included

The Culinary Institute of Michigan (CIM)

Join us in the kitchen with an Associate in Baking and Pastry, Culinary Arts, or Food and Beverage Management. Programs are available in Port Huron or Muskegon, Michigan. CIM is one of two Institutions Statewide and one of only six in the U.S. to earn the “Recognition of Quality Culinary Education” designation from the Prestigious Global Food Authority World Association of Chefs’ Societies.

The Auto/Diesel Institute of Michigan (ADI)

Get ready to start your career with an Associate or Certificate in Automotive Service Technology or Diesel Service Technology. Programs located in Owosso, Michigan.

Rules & Qualifications

  • The BeFree tuition guarantee is available for the fall, spring and summer semesters.
  • The amount of tuition included in this guarantee will not exceed the standard Undergraduate Programs tuition rate. Students attending The Culinary Institute of Michigan, The Auto Diesel Institute of Michigan, or the College of Nursing programs will be responsible for paying specialty program tuition costs that exceed standard tuition costs.
  • The BeFree Tuition Guarantee is considered a Last Dollar option, which means that funds will be awarded if grants, scholarships, and other resources (federal, state, institutional, employer, military, or other agencies) do not cover the standard Undergraduate Program tuition. Loans are not considered in this calculation.
  • Students may be responsible for institutional and course fees, books, software, supplies, or other program specific materials.

  • The student must enroll as a new Baker College student (students who previously attended Baker College are not eligible)
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and complete the verification process (if applicable)
  • Enroll in an undergraduate degree or certificate program
  • Qualify for the maximum Federal Pell Grant award amount (typically income below $50,000, but varies based on family size and other information from the FAFSA application)
  • Attend at least half-time (six or more credit hours each semester) in classes that apply toward the student’s program
  • High School Graduates – must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher by the end of their senior year
  • Transfer Students – must have a college cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Withdrawn, dropped and failed classes may result in loss of BeFree Tuition Guarantee eligibility and/or increased tuition costs to students

  • Continue to meet the maximum Pell Grant eligibility requirements annually
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) annually
  • Maintain continuous half-time attendance in classes that apply toward the student’s program
  • Maintain Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements
